Four & Five Islands [8-bit VSU+GB] | Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen

This was supposed to be a straight conversion from my old PCE arrangement of this song. And yeah, it was much easier than arranging it from scratch, but there were still a fair few problems to solve. With more channels (9 instead of 6) come more responsibility. In this case, fitting that higher countermelody that I cut out in the PCE arrangement. I ended up choosing the DMG Wave instead of the VSU #5 (which goes unused) because of a couple of VSU limitations—it can only have 5 wavetables loaded at once (and I was already using all of them), and it literally can't go high enough for this countermelody. In fact, neither can the wave channel, so I had to resort to a certain trick: on the higher portions of the song, the wavetable shifts to a "doubled" version of the same wave, meaning it sounds as if it's playing an octave higher. This would be impossible to do if I had used the VSU #5, since I was already using all the wavetables elsewhere. For the same reason, but on the other hand of the frequency spectrum, it ended up being the Pulse 2 carrying the bassline. The good thing about having two noise channels is that the percussion is much richer. And I can now make actual chords with another VSU channel. So the song sounds quite a bit more "filled in" compared to the old PCE version. But the conversion was so straight-forward that the wavetables were basically resued verbatim.
