The May 1998 riots left scars for the Chinese-Indonesian community in Solo. Drawing from this bitter experience, Solo today strives to foster spaces of encounter. One way to achieve this is through Grebeg Sudiro, a festival that brings together Chinese and Javanese traditions in a unified cultural atmosphere. Mountains of traditional Chinese cakes, lion dances, and local arts are not merely celebratory. Grebeg Sudiro is the face of Solo, a city that continues to learn: that peace does not come suddenly, but is built from memory, courage, and togetherness.
