Kharafi in Kafuta
This Participatory Video, produced by the people of Kafuta, in the West Coast Region of The Gambia looks into the contentious issue of land grabbing which has plagued them for the past 14 years or so. It highlights the stories of residents of Kafuta, who as a community had suffered from the occupation of a vast area of their farmlands by The Karafi Group, denying them access to utilize it for their farming activities, which is the main economic activity of the community. The land in questions was allegedly given away to the Kharafi Group by the then government of the Gambia, without the consent of the people of Kafuta. This has culminated in a contentious relation between the Kharafi farm in the community and the people of Kafuta. Numerous attempts have been made to solicit support from various government institutions to remedy the situation but to no avail, and compensation routes have been sought to no avail as well. The video essentially captures numerous stories of struggle for sustenance and justice. Facilitated by Gambia Participates, with support from the ATJLF.
