I dive into database scores from AniList, Kitsu, Annict, and manami-project's anime-offline-database (https://github.com/manami-project/ani...) to settle the "old vs new anime" debate. But data isn't everything, and these are a few of many databases (selected due to accessibility for analysis code). I also explore the anime industry's transition from traditional hand-drawn cel animation to modern digital pipelines. From survivorship bias and the seasonal cour system to the physical weight of classics like Akira and Evangelion versus modern sakuga, I break down why anime looks and feels so different today.
