SAIAB Seminar Series 2026: Dr Taryn Murray
Presentation by Dr Taryn Murray Instrument Scientist, NRF-SAIAB Fin-tastic fidelity: A faithful and familiar finned visitor When one thinks of a raggedtooth shark, the image of a shark swimming in the open ocean might spring to mind. Or, perhaps them swimming in an aquarium. Very rarely do we think of them venturing into shallower systems, ones that we are more familiar with – estuaries. This presentation follows the story of a raggedtooth shark that was released by the Two Oceans Aquarium, and the unexpected place it spent much of its eight years post-release, making us realise that we still have so much to learn when it comes to these finned animals and where they move. Further, in celebration of Shark Awareness Day, celebrated on 14 July each year, we’ll learn more about the different sharks (and rays) whose movements are being studied along the South African coastline.
