Le Moyen Âge imaginaire, avec William Blanc
Make a donation and receive a gift: http://don.storiavoce.com/ [Rebroadcast] The Middle Ages are much more than a historical period: they are a rich book of images from which artists, creators, and popular cultures have constantly drawn, tirelessly reinventing illuminations, dungeons, and cathedrals according to their own tastes and those of their time. While Notre-Dame de Paris is a medieval cathedral, it was partly revisited in the 19th century. The chimeras, monsters caricaturing the Middle Ages, come straight from the imagination of the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879). When we look at them, the Middle Ages appear sublime, grandiose, fascinating as well as monstrous, fantastical, and frightening. Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc in architecture, Umberto Ecco and Walter Scott in literature, Game of Thrones on screen, and Puy du Fou in its shows. Everyone reinvents the Middle Ages in their own way. This is called medievalism. When did this movement begin and how has it evolved? Who are the stars of medievalism? Does it serve or harm history?
