What are hanging cities? Today, they are more like hanging villages, fortified settlements, or tribal dwellings built of clay and stone in the medieval Sahara Desert in North Africa. They were most often built on hilltops, hilltops, and mountaintops, in oases, or directly in the desert along caravan routes. Thick walls of bricks baked from clay and straw were intended to protect inhabitants from the desert heat, but above all from attacks by marauders and warlike neighbors. Merchants and travelers crossing the desert sought refuge in them in exchange for fees and taxes. Locals, however, used ksars as granaries to store crops, grain, olive oil, water, etc. Hanging villages, also known as ksars, are widespread in the Sahara, in the areas of today's Maghreb, i.e., in areas once inhabited by Berbers. The iconic film "Star Wars" was filmed in Tunisia on several ksars. Even though we're not fans of the film, the hanging settlements and the surrounding Saharan mountains made a huge impression on us.
