Strings By Mail - Old Mission Guitar Collection - 2017 Leonardo de Gregorio “Doubletop”
Leonardo de Gregorio “Doubletop” 2017 Top: Spruce/wood lattice core/Spruce Back and Sides: Indian Rosewood Scale: 650 mm Nut: 53 mm Tuners: Sloan w/ Snakewood buttons, ball-bearing rollers Case: Stagg Hardshell Condition: Excellent Price: $9500 This spruce doubletop by the Italian luthier Leonard de Gregorio ranks among the most powerful guitars we have ever heard, easily projecting into the back rows of any concert hall. The volume is simply stunning, and with a series of small ports on the side to add to the “surround sound” effect, players will have no trouble being heard in both solo and chamber music settings. The guitar has a thick, solid fundamental core to each note and the treble strings are as full, even, and powerful as any guitar could be. The basses are likewise powerful but offer brilliant overtones along with the solid fundamental. It has a somewhat modern sound character, typical of many doubletops, but at the same time provides the player with an extraordinary array of timbres so that any type of sound from extreme ponticello to the most velvety dolce can be produced. Some have commented that de Gregorio’s instruments are similar to those of Matthias Dammann, and though this guitar is easily as powerful, de Gregorio has cultivated his own unique sound. The sleek neck shape, low action, slightly elevated fingerboard, and extremely fast response make this a performer’s dream guitar. It also has new frets and a compensated bridge and nut which allows for excellent intonation. The materials are top quality, with a lovely spruce top and very dark Indian Rosewood on the back and sides. Leonardo used a matt finish on the top, which gives the guitar a beautiful warm glow, but has kept the back and sides polished so guitar supports can be easily attached. Leonardo de Gregorio’s guitars rarely come up for sale in the US, so if you are looking for a seriously powerful, unique, and easy to play concert guitar, then this may be the perfect match for you.
