The Battle of Savo Island (1942) was the worst defeat suffered by the United States Navy in World War II. The outnumbered Japanese managed to defeat the Americans in a night naval battle, driving them off Guadalcanal and leaving the Marines stranded on the island without support. This is one of the lesser-known battles of the Pacific War, but it should be one of the best known, as it would have opened the door to a possible Japanese victory at Guadalcanal early in the campaign, but they failed to capitalize on it.
