Is CELTA Worth It? My Real Experience After 20 Years in TESOL

Is CELTA worth it? In this video, I share my personal experience of doing a CELTA, teaching English in TESOL for almost 20 years, completing diploma, masters in TESOL, and then a PhD in education, and working as a teacher trainer on a Trinity CertTESOL course. I look at what qualifications like CELTA and CertTESOL actually give you: practical lesson planning skills, classroom confidence, observed teaching practice, tutor feedback, and professional recognition in the TESOL jobs market. I also talk honestly about their limitations, including the fact that CELTA includes six assessed teaching hours within a minimum 120-hour course, while Trinity CertTESOL includes a minimum of six hours of teaching practice and 130 guided learning hours. If you are thinking about becoming an English language teacher, applying for TESOL jobs, teaching abroad, or choosing between CELTA, CertTESOL, TEFL, or a master’s in TESOL, this episode will help you think carefully about whether a teaching certificate is worth your time and money. 00:00 Is CELTA worth it? 01:12 What CELTA gave me as a new teacher 06:09 What knowledge do you actually get? 10:13 The experience of doing the course 13:27 Six hours of observed teaching 15:32 Recognition in the TESOL jobs market 20:02 When it is worth doing 21:22 Final advice Enjoyed this TESOL video?
