This poet, translator, and journalist spent most of his life on the family farm in Carrouge, a village in the Vaud Jura, which became his writing retreat. A voracious reader of French and German poetry, Roud developed a body of work deeply rooted in the landscape of French-speaking Switzerland, while also aiming for universal appeal. His complete works, recently published by Éditions Zoé, reveal his "organic" creative practices, notably his personal journal, the "attic of his work." A key aspect of his poetry is the expression of homosexual desire for peasants, a taboo of the time, explicitly sung of. These encounters fostered deep friendships. Naturally restless, Roud found in poetry an anchor, allowing him to "form his gaze" and capture "moments of paradise." A witness to rural life and its transformations, his work depicts the end of an agricultural world. Never fashionable, his poetry retains a timeless power; his questions about memory, death, and presence possess a universal depth and remain ever relevant. 0:00 Introduction to Gustave Roud 0:38 The family farm in Carrouge 2:28 Roud's poetic influences 4:29 Early collections and recognition 6:20 The publication of the complete works (2022) 7:13 The diary, "the attic of his work" 7:48 Desire and homosexuality in his work 10:39 Roud's anxieties and poetry as an anchor 12:06 The quest for "moments of paradise" 14:02 Roud, witness to rural life 16:11 A timeless and singular body of work 16:54 The balance between the local and the universal Music: © mollat [Winterreise] 7.
