This term refers to foods fermented with lactic acid, such as sour milk products, sauerkraut, and Korean kimchi. The resulting lactic acid bacteria are among the beneficial bacteria that, among other things, 1.) regulate the growth of bad bacteria and harmful substances, 2.) optimize the absorption of vitamins and minerals, and 3.) are involved in fat metabolism. Tip for a Healthy Microbiome No. 2 - Food Hygiene Always wash fruit, vegetables, and herbs thoroughly before eating. Also, make sure to thaw frozen foods completely, preferably out of their packaging, in a covered container in the refrigerator. Frozen berries should also always be heated briefly. Tip for a Healthy Microbiome No. 3 - Fewer Ready Meals Some preservatives, certain sweeteners, and the like can negatively impact the composition of the microbiome in various ways. Regular consumption can lead to digestive problems, unwanted weight gain, and even diabetes! Tip for a Healthy Microbiome No. 4 - Regular Breaks Between Meals There is now much evidence that taking hourly breaks between meals can limit the growth of bad bacteria. Anyone who manages to leave 3-5 hours between main meals and 12-16 hours overnight (keyword: intermittent fasting) can certainly do something good for their microbiome. Tip for a healthy microbiome No. 5 - Fiber Fiber is THE food for our desired intestinal bacteria. Unlike our body's own enzymes, these can break down and utilize fiber.
