On January 15, 2023, a Yeti Airlines ATR-72 crashed while landing at Pokhara International Airport, killing 72 people. On July 24, 2024, a Saurya Airlines aircraft crashed seconds after takeoff from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, killing 18. Government investigation reports in both cases cited “human error.” However, aviation expert Shishir Sharma argues that limiting the findings to technical causes is insufficient. He claims institutional negligence by the airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) may amount to criminal liability. Questions remain about pilot training, aircraft maintenance, regulatory oversight, and safety audits. Despite public reports and cabinet-formed probe committees, no criminal charges have been filed.
