Brahms: Symphony No 1 (1940) Mengelberg/Concertgebouw

Johannes Brahms Symphony No 1 in C minor, Op. 68 1. Un poco sostenuto; Allegro (0:08) 2. Andante sostenuto (14:01) 3. Un poco Allegretto e grazioso (24:14) 4. Adagio; Piu Andante; Allegro non troppo, ma non brio (28:39) Willem Mengelberg, conductor The Concertgebouw Orchestra Recorded Live on October 13, 1940 at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam Willem Mengelberg's approach to Brahms is unique, and quite interesting. He leaves no studio recording of the work, but his live performances from 1940 and 1943 remain. Since the Concertgebouw is such a high quality orchestra, most live performances are nearly as tight as an edited studio performance. The present recording has condition issues, including both surface wear and modulation. These have been addressed for this edition, but cannot be corrected completely.
