In this episode, I talk about why collective responsibility for strategy means that no one is accountable for it, why a team of directors will never come up with a strategic direction for the CEO, and why a goal – even a very ambitious one – is not a strategy. The most common reason is a lack of individual responsibility for strategy. When the CEO assigns direction to a team of directors, they trigger groupthink – each department pulls in its own direction, the plan looks good on the slides, but the company stagnates. What is groupthink in a company? It's a mechanism in which a group strives for agreement and harmony at the expense of a sober assessment of the situation. People have doubts but don't voice them – so as not to appear to be disruptive. Silence at a meeting is interpreted as agreement. The result: a plan everyone has accepted has no chance of success. What is the difference between a goal and a business strategy? A goal is a declaration – I want to have a hundred million. Strategy is the decision-making that keeps marketing, sales, and operations aligned. Without these decisions, each department optimizes for its own interests, and the company doesn't grow, even when everyone works hard. Why are CEOs afraid to make strategic decisions? Because if the CEO makes a decision and it doesn't work out, the CEO is to blame. If they shift responsibility to the team, the team is to blame. This isn't cynicism; it's a deeply embedded human mechanism for avoiding responsibility that destroys companies at every level. Who should be responsible for strategy in a company? One specific person – the owner, the CEO, or a designated strategic leader. Collective responsibility for strategy means, in practice, that no one is accountable for it. Directors should provide facts, metrics, and problems – not dictate the company's direction. Why doesn't replacing a director improve results? Because the problem rarely lies with a specific individual. It lies in a lack of strategy and a lack of clear decisions from above. A new director enters the same system, does the same things as their predecessor, and after a few quarters, history repeats itself.
