Nevertheless, the judges rewarded the overall quality of their skating and presentation, giving them the edge over the reigning champions. Defending champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov (Евгения Шишкова / Вадим Наумов) of Russia produced arguably the cleanest technical skate of the evening, yet commentators questioned whether their program possessed the emotional impact expected of World champions. Germany's Mandy Wötzel and Ingo Steuer struggled with costly jumping errors, while fellow Russians Marina Eltsova and Andrei Bushkov (Марина Ельцова / Андрей Бушков) mounted a strong comeback from fourth after the short program to narrowly overtake the Germans. One of the highlights of the broadcast came from Americans Jenni Meno and Todd Sand, whose elegant and expressive performance earned a standing ovation and was praised by the CBC team as the skate of the night. Although conservative jump choices in the short program ultimately kept them from challenging for gold, they rose to claim the bronze medal after the final standings were decided.
