I'm sometimes asked which literary works of our time will be considered "classics" in a hundred years - and I'm convinced that this book will remain so: THE HANDMAID'S TALE by Margaret Atwood stands alongside the great dystopian novels such as 1984 and BRAVE NEW WORLD. On the one hand, the theocratic dictatorship that Atwood sets in the USA is exciting, but on the other hand, it is especially how she portrays the oppression and disenfranchisement of women within this system. She repeatedly switches between an extreme outside perspective, the description of the smallest details in the more than dreary everyday life of the "handmaid" Offred, the novel's main character, and her memories and thoughts in which she seeks to escape this outside world. Michael Sommer and his Playmobil ensemble present a compact and entertaining short version of the novel, although it must be emphasized again how much has been omitted!
