Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, kept for himself some of the devoted things, and the Lord's anger burned against the Israelites. 2 Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-Aven, east of Bethel. “Go up,” he told them, “and explore the land.” So they went up and explored Ai. 3 When they returned to Joshua, they said, “It is useless for all the people to go up. Let only two or three thousand men go and take the city. Do not weary yourselves, for the people of the city are few.” 4 About three thousand men went, but they were defeated by the people of Ai. 5 Thirty-six men fell dead; the enemy pursued them from the city gate as far as Shebarim, even as they fled up the slope. The people were dismayed by this, and all their courage died. 6 Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the Lord until evening, both he and the elders of Israel, and they put dust on their heads. 7 “Ah, Lord,” Joshua cried, “why did you bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites, who will destroy us? If only we had stayed on the other side of the river! 8 What shall I say, Lord, when I see Israel turning its back on its enemies? 9 The Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear about it, and they will surround us and wipe our name from the face of the earth. And what will you do for your great name?” 10 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated the covenant I commanded them to keep, and they have taken the devoted things, stolen them, and lied about, and concealed them among their baggage. 12 That is why the Israelites could not stand against their enemies, but turned back, for they fell under the devoted things. If you do not remove the devoted things from among you, I will not be with you anymore. 13 Go and consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Purify yourselves for tomorrow, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: The devoted things are among you, Israel. You will not be able to stand against your enemies until you remove the devoted things from among you.’ 14 You will come Tomorrow, tribe by tribe; the tribe designated by the Lord will present itself family by family; and the marked family will present itself by its houses; and the house indicated by the Lord will present itself by persons. 15 The one designated as possessing the forbidden thing will be burned, he and all that belongs to him, because he violated the covenant of the Lord and committed an infamy in Israel.” 16 The next morning, Joshua commanded the people to come forward, tribe by tribe, and the lot fell on the tribe of Judah. ​​17 Then, as the families of Judah approached, the lot indicated the family of Zerah. He commanded the family of Zerah to approach by houses, and the lot fell on the family of Zabdi, 18 which presented itself by persons; The lot fell on Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah. 19 Joshua said to him, “My son, give glory and honor to the Lord, the God of Israel; confess to me what you have done, without hiding anything.” 20 Achan answered Joshua, “Yes, I am the one who has sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I did: 21 I saw among the spoils a beautiful robe of Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, and I coveted them. All this is hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver under the robe.” 22 Joshua sent some men to investigate the tent, and they saw that the objects were hidden there, with the silver underneath. 23 They took them and brought them to Joshua and to all the Israelites and placed them before the Lord. 24 Then Joshua, in the presence of all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, with the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, Achan’s sons and ...
