The Hardest Question in Fragrance: Is It Different Enough

Every fragrance lover knows the temptation: you fall in love with a sample and immediately want a full bottle. But before I buy, fragrances go through my process. There are a few exceptions (the rare “blind buy”). In this video I walk through exactly how I decide whether a fragrance belongs in my collection. It starts on paper, moves to skin, and then comes the most important step of all—comparing it against fragrances I already own. If it’s too close to something already on my shelves, it won’t make the cut. Fragrances I’m considering: • Iris Root – Loewe • Quercus – Penhaligon’s • Constantinople – Penhaligon’s • Tansu Silk – Nos Republic Comparison fragrances: • Sel Marin – James Heeley • No. 7 La Sel de la Terre – Thomas Kosmala • Incarnata – Anatole Lebreton • Iris 39 – Le Labo • Lipstick On – Maison Margiela • Babylon – Penhaligon’s • Herod – Parfums de Marly • Soie Malaquais – Dries Van Noten I’d love to hear how you decide when a fragrance deserves a full bottle. Do you compare against your own collection, or do you simply buy what you love?
