Woodturning| Wonky Wings & Plum Perfection : A Bowl with a Twist

After attending the ‪@ChestnutProducts‬ Woodturning Weekender this year, I came away inspired by the incredible demos and conversations with fellow makers. One of the highlights was picking up another beautiful piece of Masasa, which I turned into a square bowl with a twist—drawing creative influence from Katie Armstrong and Gary Lowe. The bowl was turned from Masasa and finished with ‪@rubiomonocoatuk‬ Oil Plus 2C Pure, which brought out the wood’s natural depth and character beautifully. To complement the bowl, I crafted a lid from seasoned plum wood I had at home, showcasing some stunning colour variation. The base of the lid was textured using the Simon Hope Mini Texturing Tool, sealed with Chestnut Products Cellulose Sanding Sealer, and topped with Wipe-on Poly for a glossy finish. The top of the lid was sealed with cellulose sanding sealer, then polished with ‪@EasyWoodTools‬ Yorkshire Grit and Microcrystalline Wax for a smooth, tactile surface. To complete the piece, I turned a finial from ash, inspired by Stephen Madden. It was finished with Chestnut Products Ebonising Lacquer, polished with Yorkshire Grit Microfine, and sealed with Microcrystalline Wax for a refined, elegant touch. This project also saw plenty of use of my ‪@DremelUK‬ 8260, which was invaluable for the carving and sanding stages. It helped bring out the finer details and added dimension to the final piece.
