I left my guesthouse early and drove beneath towering storm clouds and then clear blue skies to reach my first stop - the Walter Mitty Bridge. From there I headed east to Skogafoss - one of the south coasts most spectacular waterfalls. After a spot of lunch in my car I realised the fuel level was lower than I thought and so the next hour became a wild goose chase for a fuel station. I’m also sharing a look at my accommodation for the night—the Farmhouse Lodge near Vík. Found via Airbnb, this spot offered a great price, free parking, and a spectacular view of the south coast’s fields and meadows. I’ll give you a tour of my room and share how much I paid. Back on the road I drove across a causeway and up to a viewpoint on the Dyrhólaey Peninsula where I was blasted by wind and stunning views in equal measure. Whilst there I saw the Dyrhólaey Lighthouse, a never ending black sand beach and the epic Dyrhólaey Arch. This portion of my day was memorable as the causeway and road to get up and down from the observation area is winding and wild - definitely Icelandic road trip material! As the clock approached 10pm I was relieved to roll into the car park of the black sand Reynisfjara Beach - known locally as the most dangerous and unforgiving beach in Iceland due to a phenomenon known as sneaker waves.
