The 26-year-old defendant allegedly punched the conductor so hard in the head during a ticket check near Landstuhl that he later died in the hospital. The defendant, a Greek national, did not have a ticket and refused to show identification. The conductor then asked him to leave the regional express train. The defendant flew into a rage and repeatedly punched the victim with full force until Serkan Calar lost consciousness. The 36-year-old died of a brain hemorrhage. The attack was recorded by the train's security cameras. The man, a resident of Luxembourg, is charged with manslaughter. The prosecution has demanded a 12-year prison sentence. The victim's family's lawyers, however, consider the act murder and are pleading for a life sentence.
