I’m calling it “Three Truths and a Lie.” And it’s designed to test your knowledge of Rock History. You can maybe think of it as a pop quiz. So here’s how it works. During this episode, I’m going to tell you four unbelievable stories that sound too crazy to be real. But here’s the twist: three of them are 100% true… and as for the other one. Well, it’s a complete fabrication. Well, okay… There will be “some” true parts in the story, but when you put it all together, it’s a fake. Your job is to figure out which one of these stories is “not true” before the end of the episode and then tell me which one it is in the comment section. Later, at the end of the show, I’ll reveal the answer… Okay, so for this inaugural episode, I’ve chosen the theme “Rock Rivalries.” These are stories about the greatest feuds of the rock era. So listen closely, and see if you can spot the fake story. So everyone knows about the rivalry between Van Halen’s frontmen, David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar… In fact, it has become such a big issue that within Van Halen’s fandom, most people feel like they’ve got to pick a side… Diamond Dave or the Red Rocker. Personally, I love both eras for different reasons. For me, it’s less about choosing a side and more about loving Eddie Van Halen’s genius no matter who was behind the mic. But let’s get into the rivalry. And then tell me if this is a true story. Okay, so when David Lee Roth left Van Halen after their blockbuster LP “1984”, the split sparked one of rock’s longest-running feuds. Roth had been the charismatic, acrobatic face of the band, but Eddie Van Halen and the others had grown tired of the ego and the over-the-top antics. Enter Sammy Hagar, fresh off his solo hit “I Can’t Drive 55,” who stepped in and took the band into its most commercially successful era. Fans were divided from day 1… DLR loyalists clung to Roth’s swagger and showmanship, while Sammy supporters pointed to Hagar’s stronger voice and a string of chart-topping hits. There’s no doubt, the press loved to stir the pot, and both singers played along… tossing verbal grenades whenever they had the chance. Roth derided Van Halen’s post-’85 music as slick and soulless. Hagar mocked Roth’s vocals, calling him “a guy who sings like he’s in a lounge in Las Vegas”. David shot back, dismissing Sammy’s lyrics as “Hallmark card rock.” For the next decade, interviews became a proxy battlefield, with each singer claiming to be the “legitimate” Van Halen frontman. Then, when Hagar left the band in 1996, the rivalry intensified. Van Halen briefly reunited with David Lee Roth for a couple of tracks on a greatest hits album…
