A BRIEF GUIDE FOR AN ORCHID LOVER AND ANY OTHER PLANT; Observations that may be useful today... 1) I shouldn't have more orchids than I can properly care for. 2) I should treat them as living beings and try to understand them, which is perhaps the most important goal of orchid growing. 3) I shouldn't change anything in a plant that is always progressing and improving: it's a satisfied plant, and any change introduced could harm its rhythm. 4) I should disturb my plants as little as possible, not constantly changing their location. I should remember that they have, at great cost, created a favorable environment and adapted to it, therefore I shouldn't disturb them. 5) I should be careful with insecticide dosages, because they could harm my plants. 6) I should also be careful with fertilization: I shouldn't demand that my plants reach exceptional development, because they will always develop within certain limits. 7) I should spend as much time as possible with my plants in order to get to know them better. 8) I should study and observe my plants and not follow hunches in their cultivation. 9) I should do everything right to become a good orchid grower and cultivator. 10) I should participate in exhibitions but not discuss judging or prizes, because the greatest prize is the proof of cooperation I give by taking my plants to them. 11) I should visit my orchid-loving friends, always trying to bring them a beautiful orchid or a seedling of an orchid that will give them pleasure. 12) I should look at my friends' plants, but not give any opinion about them unless asked to do so. It is human vanity to judge that what one has is the best. 13) I should give my opinion simply, seeking terms that do not offend anyone's sensibilities. I must remember that orchid growing is a means of connection, of making friends, not enemies. 14) I should never say that my plant is better, even though I sometimes think so. 15) When asked, I should give the advice requested clearly, trying to guide the novice orchid grower, remembering that I have already been through this period. 16) I should not keep anything I know a secret, because I must always remember that, acting otherwise, I am nothing more than an egoist.
