Scientists Found a Hidden Magma System Below Mediterranean — And It Already Moved "Something massive is moving beneath one of the world's most famous islands. In 2025, a seismic crisis in Santorini revealed a geological secret that changed everything we knew about the region. Just 7 kilometers from Santorini — one of the most photographed islands in the world — an active submarine volcano called Kolumbo has been quietly accumulating magma for 375 years. In 2022, scientists discovered a hidden magma chamber beneath it holding 1.4 cubic kilometers of molten rock, growing at roughly 4 million cubic meters per year. Then, in early 2025, something moved underground — triggering over 25,000 earthquakes, forcing 11,000 people to evacuate Santorini by ferry and plane, and prompting a state of emergency in Greece. Scientists now describe the two volcanoes as two aortas attached at depth to a hidden magmatic heart. The earthquakes looked tectonic. Every expert said tectonic.
