Evening Prayers at a 600-Year-Old Buddhist Temple (Golden Temple/Kathmandu, Nepal)

🏮 One of Nepal’s hidden treasures… Hidden among the narrow streets of Lalitpur (Patan) in the Kathmandu Valley, this remarkable site is known locally as Kwa Bahal and officially as Hiranya Varna Mahavihar. Most visitors simply call it the Golden Temple. When I arrived, it was late afternoon, and preparations for the evening prayers had already begun. Excited by the atmosphere, I asked for permission to film. Seeing that I was respectful of the sacred environment, the temple attendants did not hesitate to allow it. They even brought me a chair so I could comfortably follow the ceremony. This was not only an act of hospitality but also reflected the fact that certain parts of the ritual traditionally require participants to remain seated as a sign of respect. At first glance, the entrance appears to lead into an ordinary courtyard. Yet the moment you step inside, you find yourself surrounded by a centuries-old Buddhist monastery glowing in golden hues. Although the present structure dates to 1409, its origins go back much further. Its golden appearance comes not from solid gold, but from exquisitely crafted gilded copperwork. The sacred chaitya (stupa) at the center of the courtyard is believed to be even older than the monastery itself. Around it stand numerous images of Buddha, Lokeshvara, Tara, and other Buddhist figures. Some of Nepal’s finest examples of metal craftsmanship can be found here. The young boy who appears in the video is not simply a visitor. In the Newar Buddhist tradition of Nepal, children begin learning temple life and sacred rituals from an early age. They help prepare daily worship, light butter lamps, ring bells, arrange offerings, and contribute to preserving traditions that have continued for centuries. The young attendant moving quietly through the temple is, in many ways, a living part of this cultural heritage. One of the temple’s greatest treasures is an approximately 800-year-old manuscript of the Prajñāpāramitā, one of Buddhism’s most revered texts. Written partly in gold ink, this sacred manuscript is still preserved and revered today. According to local legend, the monastery was built on a site where a mouse once chased a cat — an extraordinary event considered a sacred omen. For this reason, traditions involving mice have survived at the temple to this day.
