IR Focusing - Are You Focusing It Right?

If you're passionate about shooting infrared photos with film, you're likely aware that focusing for infrared light differs from focusing for visible light. This is due to infrared's longer wavelength. You might have heard that the slight focus difference between visible and infrared light doesn’t noticeably impact the final image, especially if you're using a smaller aperture. But is that really the case? Today, I'm conducting an experiment to find out. I’ll shoot the same scene twice with the same film and filter, but with one key difference: the first shot will be focused for visible light, while the second will be adjusted specifically for infrared. Based on my research, adjusting the focus for infrared involves moving the lens slightly further from the film—a small shift based on the lens's focal length divided by 400. For example, with a 47mm lens, I’d need to move the lens about 0.1mm further. With a 210mm lens, the adjustment increases to around 0.5mm. Curious to see the results?
