Horses are very intelligent animals, and they know that when the days get shorter, the jingly music starts playing on the radio, and everyone’s mood begins to change, that December is approaching, Christmas is just around the corner, and that it’s time to get festive and start celebrating the Holidays by decorating their house and getting all dressed up. And what better way for this distant cousin of Mr. Ed to join in on all the Holiday spirit than by dressing up with a Christmas wreath! So, let’s have a fun art class together and learn how to paint this lovely brown and tan equine as it stands proudly gazing at the viewer with a Christmas decorate wreath around its neck. The first step you’ll learn in this animal portrait lesson is to paint a dark gradated background to create the look and feel of a silent night, perfect for setting the mood for this Holiday painting. After learning how to draw a horse profile and wreath using an easy dot-to-dot method, you’ll apply a simple base coat to work off of. Then you’ll learn how to paint the body of a horse by adding highlights and shadows to create curves, contours and muscles in the horse’s physic. Then you’ll learn how to paint fur by layering colors to add texture and dimension creating a realistic 3D effect like a photograph. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to paint facial features, including, eyes, nose, ears and a mouth, using just a few simple painting tricks and brushstrokes. In the next step you'll paint a horse’s mane using a directional brushstroke to create movement and flow to the stallion’s hair. After painting the base coat to your wreath and ornaments in the next step, you’ll a shine and reflections on the sparkling bauble ornaments. You can personalize the type of horse to resemble your favorite, like a Quarter, Arabian, Thoroughbred, Appaloosa, Clydesdale, Morgan, or a Shetland Pony, or just customize the color to be chestnut, palomino, buckskin, black or gray. Maybe you want to paint a Santa hat on its head or mistletoe on his ears. The options are endless, you could put wings or a horn on the horse to create a Pegasus or unicorn. Add stars, snow, or twinkles in the background for an added Christmas effect. Inspired by the strength and gentle nature of these giant animals, horses can symbolize purity, heroism, spiritual enlightenment, and the triumph of good over evil, which is the essence of the Holiday spirit.
