A 6-Year-Old Ran Out to My Mail Truck With a Note in Crayon: "My Mom Eats Lunch Alone Too."

The note was written in crayon — but the handwriting at the bottom wasn't a kid's. I'd delivered mail on the Linden Heights route for ten years. In ten years a lot has been handed to me at mailboxes. Never a purple-crayon note, run out to the curb by a six-year-old in rain boots and a tutu. "Do you eat lunch alone? Mommy does. She eats by the window when you come. Do you want to not eat alone? — Hazel (age 6)" And underneath, in a mortified adult's pen: "Hazel I told you NOT to — I'm so sorry, please ignore this. — M."
