The police corporal who killed 19-year-old Darlin Mercado Reyes last Friday in the La Cañada neighborhood of Guajimía, in the Herrera sector of Santo Domingo Oeste, could face a sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison, according to the Dominican Penal Code. The Public Prosecutor's Office, in its legal assessment of the incident, accuses Officer José Francisco Moreta Heredia of voluntary homicide, as defined in Article 295 of the Penal Code. The maximum sentence could increase significantly to 30 years in prison if the investigation proves that the homicide was accompanied by aggravating circumstances such as premeditation or ambush, which would then be classified and prosecuted as murder.
