In our latest video, "The Most Important Things You Need to Know About GMT Watches!", we delve deep into the world of GMT watches and explain what distinguishes a true GMT from a non-true one. GMT watches display an additional time zone, usually with a fourth hand, and are especially useful for travelers and people who communicate across different time zones. We compare two models: the Breitling Chronomat and the Longines Spirit Zulu Time. While both watches are considered GMT watches, only the Longines is referred to as a "true GMT." The crucial difference lies in the adjustable hour hand. On a true GMT, like the Longines, the hour hand can be adjusted independently of the other hands in one-hour increments without stopping the watch. This makes these watches particularly practical for travelers, as the time can be quickly adjusted to a new time zone without having to reset the reference time (e.g., home time). In contrast, with a non-true GMT, like the Breitling, the watch must be stopped and completely reset. We also call the true GMT a "travel GMT" because it's designed especially for frequent travelers. The "office GMT," on the other hand, is ideal for those who remain in one time zone but want to keep track of another—for example, for international meetings. The development of these watches has also made exciting progress: While true GMT movements were once only found in expensive luxury watches, manufacturers like Longines and ETA are now bringing the complication to more affordable models. This means that more and more people can enjoy the benefits of a travel GMT.
