Yet, many researchers have tirelessly reiterated for years that it is necessary to question the model of infinite economic growth when we live on a finite planet. While it is becoming increasingly urgent to reinvent our economic models and crises are intensifying worldwide, the current public debate is completely devoid of any questioning of capitalism and growth at any cost. We were with Blast at the @FIFDH_Geneve International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneva precisely to finally discuss alternatives. How can we build a society that respects planetary boundaries while guaranteeing justice and equity? What might a post-growth economy look like? A regenerative, redistributive economy that ensures fundamental rights for all. In short, a completely new balance. Paloma Moritz asks her three guests about all these questions and many more in this roundtable discussion with: Olivia Lazard, researcher and member of Carnegie Europe. Her research focuses primarily on the geopolitics of climate, the climate transition, and the risks of conflict and vulnerability associated with climate change and biodiversity loss. Timothée Parrique, ecological economist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. He holds a PhD in economics and specializes in the link between economics, the environment, and post-capitalist theories. He is the author of Slow Down or Perish: The Economics of Degrowth (2022), published by Seuil. Julia Steinberger, ecological economist at the University of Lausanne. Her research focuses on the links between resource use and societal performance. Since 2023, she has co-directed the "REAL - A Post-Growth Deal" project on post-growth societies. She is a lead author of the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report, within Working Group III.
