In this program, we'll tell you about the founder of the Ottoman Empire, Osman I Ghazi, son of Ertugrul. As we discussed in the previous episode, the Ottomans are descended from the Muslim Turkic Kayı tribe. This tribe descends from the Turkic Oghuz tribes, or, as they are called in Arabic sources, the Ghuzz. After the Kayı fled Central Asia to escape the Mongol massacres, Ertugrul Bey, son of Suleiman Shah, settled with his small tribe in western Anatolia, in Asia Minor. This happened after he aided the Muslim Rum or Seljuk Sultanate in one of their battles. The Sultan of the Rum Seljuks then granted them land on the border with the Byzantine Empire. Osman assumed control of this territory at the age of 23, following the death of his father. Osman Ghazi united the various Turkic tribes and began working on the formation of a modern, organized army. He also sought to introduce special forces into the army, with which he achieved major victories against the Byzantine Empire and its allies among the small Christian kingdoms in Anatolia. In this episode of "100 Great Men," we will, in sha Allah, explore in detail this great figure of the Islamic Ummah, discussing his victories and the steps he took to establish a state whose lands spanned Asia, Europe, and Africa, and which played a role in recording the history of the entire earth for over six centuries.
