This limestone was formed from the accumulation of animal shells that lived on coral reefs, but because it is of such high quality, mining began at the beginning of the Showa era and continues to this day. Shiraiwa settlement has a long history, and is home to the legend of defeated Heike warriors. Around 1950, 23 houses lined the mountain path to Torisubi Pass, which leads to Urayama in Chichibu, making up the two settlements of Kamishiroiwa and Shimoshiraiwa. Local livelihoods center around forestry. Charcoal making is particularly popular, and the sight of housewives carrying charcoal on their way to Nago for shopping is a symbol of the harsh lifestyle, but it has also become a seasonal sight. Mountain dwellers have long worshiped the "mountain god," giving thanks to the mountain and praying for safety at work. Shiraiwa also holds the "Amazake Festival" in autumn, where sweet sake (amazake) is made and offered to six mountain gods. When Naguri Village was established in 1889, it was an independent administrative district with 15 districts. However, as times changed, people moved away, and the area has been uninhabited since 1985.
