Hungary’s Parliament witnessed a historic and emotional moment as young Roma musicians from the ‘Sugo Tambura’ band performed the iconic ‘Roma hymn’ during the inaugural session of the country’s new parliament following Peter Magyar’s election victory. The performance marked the first time a Roma song was played during an inaugural parliamentary ceremony in Hungary. Footage shows the children rehearsing with tamburas and guitars before travelling to Budapest, where they fulfilled a dream sparked months earlier when Peter Magyar promised them they would one day see the inside of Parliament. Band leader Zsolt Nebl recalled how the children had admired the building from outside during Magyar’s campaign visit, with the future prime minister later keeping his word after winning the election. The emotional performance highlighted the struggles and hopes of Hungary’s Roma community, with Nebl stressing the importance of giving disadvantaged children opportunities through music and education.
