GranOcean W72 "Test & Performance Review" 2026

For the first time, BoatTEST puts the 2026 GranOcean W72 through a full sea trial to verify its performance, fuel efficiency, and structural integrity. Naval architect Howard Apollonio designed this platform with a 32'8" (10 m) beam carried fully forward, creating a stable, high-volume catamaran engineered for long-range cruising and extended time away from the dock. The W72 is built using advanced vacuum-infused, closed-cell foam-cored composite panels with materials from Gurit SP. This construction method ensures a high strength-to-weight ratio, which we put to the test in offshore conditions with winds gusting to 25 knots. Performance Data: Our test boat was equipped with the upgraded twin 1,150-hp Cat C18 diesel inboards (twin 550-hp Cummins are standard). Top Speed: We reached a top speed of 26 knots at 2200 RPM. Cruising Efficiency: At a transition speed of 14.8 knots (1600 RPM), the W72 burns 47 GPH. Long Range: For those prioritizing distance, dropping back to 9.7 knots (1000 RPM) results in a fuel burn of just 12.1 GPH, providing an estimated range of over 1,100 nautical miles from the 1,585-gallon (6,000 L) fuel capacity. Interior & Customization: With custom interiors by Vripack, the W72 is a "blank nautical canvas." The model we tested featured a five-stateroom layout, including three guest suites to port and two VIP suites to starboard. The main deck salon is defined by a single-level layout with a full galley featuring Bosch and Fisher & Paykel appliances.
