When I wrote this song I thought about my grandmother and many young girls like her. I thought I was writing about historical events, an old story, and then came to learn that this story, is sadly still one of many young girls in our world today. I dedicate this song to Hellen Nkuraiya And Esther Naini, the Maasai women who help girls escape female genital mutilation and forced marriage. Hellen is a very special Maasai woman who has been working for girls like Esther Naini for years. She is providing shelter and education for these Maasai girls with her school Enkiteng Lepa. She has also set up a shelter village for Maasai widows. This work moves me deeply. In honour of these women and girls, I dedicate this song. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lyrics: Mama oh Mama don’t send me away In your safe loving arms I just want to stay I know he brings honor And I know he has means But I don’t love him and I’m only Thirteen There’s no other choice daughter No other choice For the world isn’t ready for the strength of your voice Put on your ring daughter Put on your ring We’re the slaves of today But tomorrow we’ll sing I wanna go to school Mama I want to go to school To make my own money And to live by my rules I got a million ideas running free in my mind Why then oh Mama, can’t my life be mine There’s no other choice daughter No other choice For the world isn’t ready for the strength of your voice Suck it all in daughter Suck it all in We’re the slaves of today But tomorrow we’ll sing Freyja! Freyja! Freyja Come on Freyja come on Freyja! Freyja! Freyja Oh what have we done Mama oh mama up in the sky In service and lien my best years passed me by His legacy while mine withered away What can I offer my daughter today Unconditional love to helpless baby In your tears and your pain hides a sweet remedy Between mother and daughter the thread lives in the wind We’re the slaves of today But tomorrow we’ll sing Freyja! Freyja! Freyja Come on Freyja come on Freyja! Freyja! Freyja Oh what have we done Freyja! Freyja! Freyja Come on Freyja come on Freyja! Freyja! Freyja Oh what have we done We’re the slaves of today But tomorrow we’ll sing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Credits: Music & Lyrics by Yael Deckelbaum Main vocals: Ester Rada & Yael Deckelbaum Drums & vocals: Karen Teperberg Bass & vocals: Eli Orr Guitar & vocals: Nitzan Alon Keybords & vocals: Maayan Linik Filmed by: Snir Katzir Sound: Dror Shaish, recorded by Mix and video edit: Yael Deckelbaum Yael Deckelbaum, is a platinum award-winning Israeli/Canadian singer/songwriter and activist. This visionary song subsequently turned into an international peace anthem. Shared by millions, it inspired women across the globe to get together and take action. Like Joan Baez and Pete Seeger, Yael has been recognized by many people as a groundbreaking musical activist of our time. With the streets as her stage and marching women as her crowd, Yael has led various women’s marches over the past two years in over 10 different countries -- from Europe to Asia and America to Africa. Yael performs internationally throughout Israel, Europe and the USA, where she has become more and more active in using her music to inspire positive change and support non-violent communication between cultures that are in conflict, emphasising the necessity of women leadership.
