Hong Kong, China | 1994 | Historical Drama | 20 Episodes Synopsis: The story revolves around Liang Tianlai (Nick Cheung) and Ling Guixing (Siu Chuen-yung), cousins. Tianlai is steady, calm, and loyal; Guixing, however, is frivolous, impulsive, superstitious, and easily manipulated. Initially, they have a close relationship, but Guixing later becomes obsessed with Dongmei (Choi Hiu-yee), who has been sold into a brothel by her father. Dongmei refuses to become Guixing's concubine and escapes to the Liang family, where Tianlai takes her in as a maid. Guixing fails to achieve his goal and gradually develops resentment towards Tianlai. To pass the imperial examinations, Guixing follows the advice of his uncle, Qu Juexing (Tam Ping-man), and bribes officials, but ultimately fails. Xing, believing the words of the charlatan Ma Banxian (played by Luo Qinghao), blamed his failure in the imperial examinations on the Liang family's stone chamber destroying the Ling family's dragon vein. Xing then tried to buy the stone chamber, but Lai, adhering to ancestral precepts, firmly refused, leading to numerous disputes arising from feng shui. Xing's wife, Xiyan (played by Li Xiaohui), a woman of great virtue, often tried to dissuade Xing from harming Tianlai, but was scorned and ultimately died in remonstrance. Xing, believing the family's misfortune was caused by the Liang family, hired thugs to kill Lai and others. Lai, upon learning this, intended to report it to the authorities with his brother Junlai, but on the way, the thugs burned down the stone chamber, resulting in the tragic deaths of Lai's wife Xiyan (played by Feng Meiying), her sister-in-law, daughter, and maid—a "seven corpses and eight lives" tragedy. Liang's mother was also blinded by the smoke. Lai went to various prefectural governments to file complaints, but the corrupt officials, bribed by Xing with money and women, all found him innocent. Lai, with grievances and nowhere to turn, faced numerous setbacks. Fortunately, Heaven intervened, and he finally encountered the wise and upright Imperial Envoy Su Peizhi (played by Jiang Tu), who successfully forwarded the case to Emperor Yongzheng (played by Zong Yang). Emperor Yongzheng presided over the trial, appointing Lai as his lawyer, and he confronted Xing in court. After much hardship, the Emperor sentenced Xing to death, and Lai finally cleared the name of his brothers, wife, and children in the afterlife.
