Dick Carter - In the Golden Age of Offshore Racing
93 year old yacht designer Dick Carter talking with Matthew Sheahan will recount how, with no formal training, he turned his hand to yacht design and won the 1965 Fastnet Race in his first go at boat design – with notable further successes to follow. He will give a personal insight into the golden age of offshore racing, explaining how his extraordinary successes were achieved and the radical innovations which took the world of yacht design by storm. Then, after a decade at the top, he left the sailing world as suddenly as he had arrived. Many of his sailing contemporaries had assumed he was dead! His talk will be supported with material from his book with graphics and images, including some of Cowes 50 years ago.
