The bridge was designed in Brazil and built in Belgium, being transported in pieces and assembled on-site by construction workers. It is 112 meters long, divided into 4 spans, the largest being 70 meters, making it the longest bridge on the railway and also the tallest, as its central span is 55 meters above the bottom of the São João River ravine, the equivalent of a 24-story building. It is the longest and also the tallest bridge on the railway. The book "A 100-Year Journey: Paranaguá-Curitiba Railway, 1885 – February 2, 1985" contains the following explanation by engineer Teixeira Soares on pages 139-140: “The three small spans are overcome with solid web beams. Only the central span is a truss. It rests on wrought iron pillars, supported on a stone masonry base. The metal structure is manufactured in Belgium. We provide the profiles of the natural terrain and the grade. They design each bridge or viaduct according to the specified freight train. Here we do the assembly, which is not easy. For many people, metal pillars may seem wasteful, if we are surrounded by abundant granite and gneiss. However, European experience has concluded that, from 30 meters onwards, iron becomes more economical than stone masonry. The accommodation and maintenance of the numerous personnel necessary for the execution of important masonry structures entail difficulties. Although this, the Metal pillars should be embedded in masonry bases at a certain height. This not only prevents moisture from causing corrosion of the metal, but also prevents it from rising to the metal structure. For spans less than 15 meters, Europeans recommend solid web beams. More daring, the Americans use them for spans up to 35 meters. Their drawback is the riveting. Insane work. As we are subject to the European market, above 15 meters we use truss beams, as in the central span. There are three types of simple trusses. In "V" trusses, known as Warren trusses, named after the English engineer who first used them in his country. In "N" trusses, or Monier trusses, named after the Belgian engineer who patented them in 1858 in Germany. Finally, Neville trusses, named after the American engineer who invented them, but which are simply a mixed type of the previous ones. Here, given the span length, the Belgians designed a double multiple truss. This bridge consumed 3,242 meters of steel. "cubs of stone masonry and 442 tons of iron." The bridge was the railway's final challenge, as intense rains paralyzed the works. Construction began in early 1882 and it was inaugurated on June 26, 1884. In 1944, it received a reinforcing trestle on the larger span. 🤜🤜🤜🤜🤜Check out our partner channels🤛🤛🤛🤛🤛 Cristina Crochet: https://goo.gl/XLnbqk Curious World: https://goo.gl/c5RKAy (Channel Narrator) Vanspilla: https://goo.gl/WTZ6n2 #bronisdrones #bronisaerialimages #curitiba #paraná #paranagua #paranaguá #morretes #bridges
