This is a special tribute to Urban Beaches (1986), the iconic debut album of Cactus World News — one of the most underrated post-punk/new wave bands to emerge from Dublin’s thriving mid-80s music scene. Back in the 1980's, I was a big fan of this band songs like “The Bridge,” “Worlds Apart,” and “Years Later” resonated strongly with listeners in Manila and across the Philippines, becoming underground favorites in Power 105BM and WXB102 FM radio. Their soaring guitar lines, anthemic choruses, and heartfelt lyrics struck a chord with a generation navigating change, distance, and hope. About the band: Cactus World News was formed in Dublin in 1984 by Frank Kearns (guitar), Eoin McEvoy (vocals/guitar), Wayne Sheehy (drums), and Fergal MacAndris (bass). They quickly gained attention when U2’s Bono helped champion their early single “The Bridge,” which paved the way for their signing with MCA Records. Urban Beaches was their most recognized release, combining post-punk intensity with a widescreen, melodic sound. Though they never reached massive commercial success, their music remains timeless for fans of the era. This tribute album is dedicated to the spirit of that time — when Cactus World News gave us songs that felt both urgent and enduring.
