The Definition of Repentance A. What repentance is not Repentance is not reformation. It is not the act of turning a new leaf. Repentance is not remorse. Remorse is a regret of the consequence or fruit of one’s offense, but not the root. Hebrews 12:16-17; Matthew 27:3-5 Repentance is not penitence – the act of attempting to make up for one’s sins through good works. B. What repentance is Repentance is a voluntary and sincere change in the mind of the sinner causing him to turn from his sin. Repentance is to hate what we once loved and to desire to not return to it. Repentance involves turning from a specific sin. Genuine repentance leads to outer change of life. II. The Driver of Repentance A. The Conviction of the Holy Spirit 1 John 1:9-10; Psalm 139:23-24 B. The Confrontation from Others 2 Samuel 12:1-7; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Timothy 4:2 III. The Display of Repentance A. There was confession of sin. Psalm 51:1-4 Confession simply means to agree with God that it is sin – not just a mistake or we were pushed into a corner and couldn’t help our response. B. There was elimination of sin.
