In 1085, Alfonso VI conquered Toledo, the former capital of the Visigothic kingdom and one of the most important cities on the Iberian Peninsula. The capture of Toledo forever changed the balance of power between Christians and Muslims and made the Leonese king the great hegemon of Hispania. However, the conquest had immediate consequences. The Taifa kings, fearful of the Castilian advance, sought help from the nascent Almoravid Empire of Yusuf ibn Tashfin, thus beginning a new era marked by holy war, the Battle of Sagrajas, and the conflict between Castile and the Almoravids.
