It was the maiden creation of BMW M GmbH (then known as BMW Motorsport GmbH), which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2022. Development of the M1, model code E26, began in the late 1970s as an attempt to put a stop to the Porsche 934 and 935, which were dominating the Group 4 and Group 5 racing categories. However, development delays made it difficult to meet the Group 4 regulations (400 units produced per year), and BMW quickly came up with the idea of ​​hosting a one-make race for the M1. This became the "Procar Race," which served as a warm-up race for the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The M1 is often described as "unfortunate" because it never performed as planned in Groups 4 and 5. However, the pro car races that took place instead were popular, thanks in part to the participation of star F1 drivers of the time, such as Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet.
