A huge celebratory roar could be heard across the capital, Seoul, where one million people had flooded the streets to watch the game on big screens. Fireworks lit up the sky and scenes of unbridled euphoria unfolded all around the country. The Red Devils were two minutes from defeat when they snatched an equaliser through Seol Ki-hyeon to take the match to extra time. Both teams had clear chances to win as penalties beckoned. Ahn Jung-hwan then scored the golden goal which gave the co-hosts victory, etching his name into the pantheon of Korean folk heroes.
