Astrophytum Myriostigma Repotting. (Cactus Diary) #4

Today we are going to repot my Astrophytum Myriostigma. When buying a new cactus it is always better to change the soil. Usually the soil present is peat-based, unsuitable for keeping them healthy. This Astrophytum is a relatively easy species to grow. To avoid root rot, it is important to keep it dry from early fall to late winter. It can resist up to -5°C, but during the cold months it is best to put it in a sheltered place. It wants an exposure from full sun to light shade: with a good amount of light, the colors of the plants will become brighter and richer. The name of the genus Astrophytum derives from the Greek words "astèr" which means "star" and "phytòn" which means "plant", as these particular cacti have many ribs, which when viewed from above look just like stars. There are many varieties of A.myriostigma. Like any cacti, the soil used must be well draining and rich in inert materials. What I use is made up by me to make sure I only use the best.
