Seto is one of the six oldest kilns in Japan with a history of 1300 years and is still considered one of the representative kilns of Japan. Amongst them, Kiseto and Oribe are the most distinguished forms of glazed pottery from Seto. Kiseto is descended from an ash glaze developed after the Kamakura period (1192-1333) and has a characteristic yellowish tone. Oribes name derives from Furuta Oribe, who was a feudal warlord in the Azuchi Momoyama period (1573-1603) and also a master of the tea ceremony. He had the potters in the Mino and Seto areas make pottery in his favorite pattern, shape and color. This was a significant characteristic of Oribe pottery for such a style had not existed before. Mr. Shinya Kato has inherited the tradition of Kiseto and Oribe and at the same time endeavored to create unique works that fit our contemporary way of life and yet have a poised and stately tone.
