At first glance, you might mistake it for a coffee shop, but it actually sells traditional Taiwanese #Hakka rice noodles – #BanTiao. Behind the noodle shop is the dedication of two generations of mother and daughter to #preserving #tradition. The noodle shop owner, Zhu Weilin, was raised by her mother, Wang Huimei, from a young age. She knows how hard it is. Her mother would get up at dawn to start work, burning firewood to boil water, grinding rice to make rice paste, then pouring the paste into an iron pan, spreading it evenly, steaming each sheet, letting it cool, and then cutting it. Every day, she made fresh Ban Tiao by hand, wholesaling it to street vendors. For over twenty years, she worked almost year-round without a break, even continuing to make Ban Tiao when she was sick, because she didn't want to affect the business of her downstream merchants. In this respect, she is actually very similar to her grandmother. Speaking of Zhu Weilin's maternal grandmother, she was the one who carried on and popularized the family's traditional craft. Years ago, after her husband passed away, she had to raise her children alone. She returned to her parents' home to learn how to make rice dishes and then set up a noodle stall at the market. Unfortunately, war broke out, the market was destroyed, and her business couldn't continue. She then decided to return home and start a wholesale rice noodle business. Perhaps because of her hard work, her wholesale business quickly flourished. Wang Huimei recalls that when she was in high school, her mother was so tired that she dozed off in the kitchen. She felt sorry for her and took over the work, learning as she went and improving her skills. More than 20 years ago, her mother grew old and the old employees retired, so she took over the rice noodle business. However, she did not expect that with the progress of the times, she would soon face the impact of mechanized production. Machines make rice noodles quickly and cheaply, and many vendors began to place orders with rice noodle factories due to cost considerations. Wang Huimei's orders dropped sharply, but she did not waver. Instead, she continued to work at her own pace every day, insisting on making rice noodles using only pure rice without any additives in the traditional way. In fact, sincerity will be seen. Later, Neipu Old Street was established, attracting many tourists. People began to notice the traditional craftsmanship in the old kitchen in the alley. Gradually, it became more and more famous. Wang Huimei was not stingy in sharing. She generously opened her kitchen for people to visit and actively participated in activities to promote traditional rice dishes. She found her unchanging value in the midst of change. But is it enough to just set up a stall to promote? They later discovered that it is not enough to just make it for people to see. They also need to let people taste it in order to truly understand the culture. Zhu Weilin thought that her grandmother had once sold noodles, and her traditional braised pork with simple ingredients and seasonings best complemented the aroma of her family's rice noodles. So, she decided to try opening a noodle shop near her mother's kitchen. She and her husband were willing to return to their hometown to give it a try. However, this decision led to a series of setbacks… First, the expense of decorating a "noodle shop" was enough to raise eyebrows among the elders, and the neighbors were also skeptical. Then, the pandemic hit, delaying the renovation and imposing occupancy restrictions for several months. The pressure was immense, but they didn't give up on innovation.
