Academy Of Tone #112: the magic of the Vox AC30 as a pedal platform with guest Gerd Vogel!

On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Gerd Vogel to dive into the magic of the legendary Vox AC30 and its superiority as a pedal platform amp! We all know the AC30 and its iconic tones that have helped define records by the likes of The Beatles, Queen, Rory Gallagher, and so many more. But perhaps one area where the amp is overlooked these days is in its flexibility and winning performance as a clean pedal platform. With this in mind, Thomas is joined by German blues rock guitarist Gerd Vogel – who is something of an AC30 expert! – to explain and showcase the full potential of this Vox masterpiece. Thomas and Gerd have an envious pedal collection between them, and they’ll be putting as many pedals through an AC30 as possible. Gerd has a few secret weapon stompboxes for his AC30 to demonstrate: the Ibanez Tube Screamer, the Vemuram Jan Ray, and the BSM RG (Rory Gallagher) Treble Booster – which of course is a pedal created by our good friend Bernd Meiser. The AC30 as a pedal platform is also a killer solution for blues rock players – which is good news for both Thomas and Gerd. Indeed, Gerd has a long history as one of Germany’s leading proponents of the genre. A supremely talented slide player – and a lover of open tunings, as well as fairly thick gauge strings – he has been in the business for decades now. Over the years, Gerd has played with the likes of Marla Glen and Wiesbaden’s highly rated Sunnyland Bluesband, among others. On the show, Gerd will be playing his beloved ’72 Strat – which he actually bought new in 1972! – and he’ll also bring his ’62 Strat to compare with Thomas’s ’61.
