A Pole flew the world's best fighter—and it was scrapped! This is the true story of Janusz Żurakowski, a boy who fled Soviet rule as a child and, in 1939, piloted an outdated aircraft to fight German bombers. He survived the Battle of Britain, became one of the world's best test pilots, and became famous for Żurakowski's extraordinary winch at the Farnborough Air Show. It was he who, on March 25, 1958, became the first to take to the skies the Avro Arrow, classified as a CF-105, a supersonic interceptor ahead of its time, capable of speeds approaching Mach 2. A year later, on Black Friday, February 20, 1959, the Canadian government not only shut down the program but also ordered its physical destruction. Approximately 14,000 people lost their jobs in a single day, and all the planes were cut up with torches and sold for scrap at 6.5 cents a pound. Who ordered this complete destruction remains a mystery to this day. The program's finest engineers went on to NASA and helped put a man on the Moon.
